States of Jersey buys Springfield Stadium
Opened in 1885, Springfield Stadium was established by the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society as a site for its regular shows. It expanded the site over the years and it later became the site for the annual Battle of Flowers. The first Muratti matches were played there in 1905 and, in the 1960s, it hosted concerts by The Beatles and Rolling Stones.
After 160 years, the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society decided that the time had come to sell the site and received an offer from a developer that wanted to construct houses on the land. However, the States of Jersey stepped in and bought the site itself to guarantee that an important sporting facility remained available for public use.
